Interested in Lost Media? help me find this LOST anime!

Posted by cmy2k - August 4th, 2021

For a few weeks now, i've been trying to find this whitewashed anime adaptation of Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer Written by Michael Ende (neverending story guy). You probably recall my fan-redesigns i posted some time ago! There's also a different German cartoon that is a more faithful adaptation to the original book by Michael Ende that has a partially-lost english dub that reappears on the internet from time to time. However, this anime i believe is 100% lost. it would be especially helpful if some japanese and german folks could help with finding this!

Lost Media subreddit article

This anime is significant to me because, when was the last time you heard of a Japanese localization that completely modifies and changes what it's adapting? usually it's the other way around. Jim Button is a beloved German story that was specifically made as a contrast to the Nazi's racist ideology and propaganda that people like Ende were forced into believing. It's quite hilarious how this japanese animation turned this beloved German fairy tale into a generic anime boy-hero trope story that was trending at the time. Help me find this lost anime that actually exists, and is not some obvious hoax like Go For A Punch.

Lost anime? Now's my time to shine.

I tried to do some research myself ^^ unfortunately, there has been no home release of this series, aside from a Toei theme song collection. Hopefully someone can get lucky and maybe buy off some old VHS tapes (you can import from many Japanese storefronts with buyee.jp) with episodes recorded on it or there can be a campaign for Toei to rerelease it. I'd imagine no one living in Japan has uploaded it online themselves because piracy is very illegal there.
